What the app keeps for your cattle

Each animal has its own record with the number the app assigns (for example BOV-01), name, breed, sex, date of birth and category, such as Dairy, Meat, Breeding or Dual purpose. Everything that happens to it is recorded from there and stays in its history.

  • Weights and daily gain. You note the weight when you take it and the app works out the daily gain between weighings and the growth curve. On the Pro plan it estimates when the animal will reach 450 kg and flags it on its record if it is growing at less than half the expected rate.
  • Milk, for the farm or per cow. The quick log takes the litres in a few seconds and asks who they are for: the whole farm, one cow or one group. In Products you see today’s total and the last 7 days; monthly and 3-month totals are on the Pro plan.
  • Matings, inseminations and calvings. You record heat, natural mating or insemination with the technician, the pregnancy check and the calving with the calf’s weight. The expected calving date is worked out for you; to get a notification, create a reminder for that date.
  • Health with withdrawal periods. Vaccines, deworming and treatments with product, batch, dose and vet. If the product has a withdrawal period, the app counts the days for milk and for meat.
  • Accounts per animal or per group. You log each sale, feed purchase or vet bill with a category and a description, and assign it to the whole farm, to one animal or to one group. Selling an animal books the income to that animal, and on the Pro plan the cost of each treatment is booked as an expense.

Animals, weights, milk, accounts, assigning them to an animal or a group, and up to 2 groups are on the free plan. Monthly milk totals, the balance per animal and per group, breeding records, health records with withdrawal periods and weight projections are part of the Pro plan.

Groups managed the way you run the pasture

Animals are sorted into groups, just as they are split up on the farm: cows in milk, dry cows, fattening steers, replacement heifers. On the Pro plan each group has its weight analytics, so you know whether the fattening group is putting on weight or falling behind. Milk and money can be logged to each group too, and on the Pro plan each group’s record shows its income, expenses and balance and its production over the last 30 days. That way you see what the milking cows bring in and what the fattening group costs, without adding it up by hand.

A group can also be counted by quantity instead of animal by animal: a running total that you update with births, purchases, deaths, sales, culls and adjustments. Animals in a quantity group do not count toward the free plan’s limit of 50 animals, but the group does count toward its 2 groups, and weight analytics need registered animals.

Record in the field, sync when you reopen it. For now, wait for the app to finish syncing before you close it. How it works today.

Common questions

Can I keep dairy and beef cows on the same farm?
Yes. Each animal has its category (dairy, meat, breeding, dual purpose...) and you can put them in separate groups, for example the milking cows and the fattening steers. On the Pro plan each group has its weight analytics. Milk, income and expenses can go to the whole farm, to one cow or to one group, and on the Pro plan each animal and each group shows its own balance.
How do I know if a steer is gaining weight?
Record its weights, from a scale or a weight tape. The app works out the average daily gain between one weighing and the next and draws each animal's growth curve.
Does the app remind me when a cow is due to calve?
On the Pro plan, when you record the mating or insemination the app works out the expected calving date using 283 days of gestation. It does not remind you on its own: create a reminder for that date and the notification reaches your phone.
Does it track milk and meat withdrawal periods?
Yes, on the Pro plan. When you record a vaccine or treatment with a withdrawal period, the app counts down to when you can sell the milk again or send the animal to slaughter.

Sources

  • Average gestation of 283 days; this is the same value the app uses to work out the calving date.
  • Dry matter intake as a percentage of live weight from the NRC requirement tables (Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle and of Dairy Cattle).
  • Animal unit of 450 kg, a common convention of livestock extension services, close to the 1,000 lb animal unit.
