How it works
How we work it out
Eggs per month equals hens times laying rate times 30 days. Feed per month is hens times grams times 30. The margin is egg income minus feed and the other costs.
The number that matters most
Feed per dozen eggs is your flock’s conversion. A commercial layer in good shape runs about 1.5 to 1.8 kg per dozen. Above 2 kg, check for waste, hens that stopped laying and feed quality.
Common questions
- How many eggs does a hen lay a day?
- At most one. At peak lay 85 to 95 hens out of 100 lay each day; the rate falls with age.
- How much does a laying hen eat?
- Between 110 and 120 g of compound feed a day, about 3.5 kg a month.
- When does a hen stop paying for herself?
- When her eggs no longer cover her feed. It usually happens after 70 to 80 weeks of age, or earlier if lay drops from disease, moult or stress.
